This is gonna be a little bit of a rant.
So, long story short, I hate my job. Some of you know where I work, some don’t. What’s important is that you know that I travel every day for work, in my own personal vehicle. My Wrangler. Whether it’s to new jersey, long island, brooklyn, wherever, i absolutely hate it. I’m not happy with the company, I’m not happy with the position. The program that I’m spearheading has a few other people like me, but in different areas of the country. I have the most locations out of anyone (~17, compared to the next- largest ~9), yet the pay is the same. Their excuse for this is that I’m closest to home, but that doesn’t help me one bit. None of these people know the struggle and frustration that is NYC traffic. None of these people understand that It’s incredibly hard to maintain having a vehicle and to pay rent in NYC, so location wasn’t taken into consideration when my offer was made, and that pisses me off; and the company I work for was born and operates in NYC! There was a massive round of layoffs, which I didn’t know until the end of the day that I was safe. There’s a lot of things. I’m actively looking. Within the next two days, I’ll hear whether I got a job at a (sort of) competitor, that will give my career an absolutely MASSIVE boost. I’ve been interviewing for a month with this company, and I’m so frustrated that I haven’t hear back yet. They said by end of this week, so they’ve got one more day.
Another thing that angers me, is I’m putting around 250 miles a week on my own personal vehicle. I’m reimbursed mileage and tolls and whatnot, but it’s still my own vehicle. I had an accident in my Focus ST my second day of work, on company time, and was forced to sell a car that I had worked SO hard and SO long for, all because the company’s too cheap to insure me themselves. I didn’t even get assistance with the deductible. My insurance surged, and I was forced to sell. I love my Wrangler, but the same issue pursues. I’ve put almost 8000 miles on in a little over two months, and it’s killing me. Eating lunch in my car, by myself is killing me because the only co workers I really end up having are over gchat. It’s degrading me every day, and I cannot wait to tell this company that they’ve got my two weeks. I called my own mother, and screamed my frustrations out to her, near-tears sitting in traffic yesterday. It helped, but I feel like crap today. My girlfriend, who I love so much, has been helping me out more than I can explain with this whole situation, helping me with my resume and using her contacts to hopefully pull something together too, and I cant appreciate it enough. Everyone I know has felt the stress and anger that I have because of this job.
I need this next step. Crossing my fingers about this other job.....
/rant.

Jesus, 8,000 miles in 2 months in a Wrangler?
RIP your ass. Used to have a 2011 4 door, so... I know how uncomfortable they can be. And they’re not the best NYC cars either.
In the job hunt boat as well. I absolutely LOATHE the whole process of applying to jobs.
Jalopnik, if you read this, hire me cause I am good at Photoshop, video editing, making GIFs, silly small video games, and making weird stuff.

Well good luck man, hope you find something else soon.

I put 550 a week on mine, not including any driving on the weekends and I don’t get reimbursed for any of it.

I wish my commute was 250 miles. Envy. 120 miles+ every single day here. Keep your head held high, it can always be worse and you’ll be out of there hopefully soon. Best of luck!

You’re...really not driving much. No offense, but if putting a paltry 250 miles a week on your vehicle, and not having lunch with coworkers has you ready to burn out - you’re not going to last long in the corporate world. I know me saying that probably triggered you, but I mean it in a helpful way. Take some time to really consider whether this is something you want to do as a career. Corporate America will ask you do to all manner of inane and dehumanizing things (trust me, I’ve been in IT for almost 20 years). I wish I could go back and change my career path before I got so far along that I feel chained to it. You may feel bad now, but trust me - you do NOT want to get this far along and feel this way about how you’ve spent your life.
Your company sucks, to be sure - they should’ve been stepping up to help with the accident costs, but 50 miles or so a day is peanuts. I’ve driven onto and off of Manhattan during rush hour, so I know exactly how bad driving in NYC can suck, so you have my sympathy in that regard, but realistically they’re NOT really asking that much of you - despite how badly you feel from how worked up you’re getting yourself.
One thing I’m curious about though. All the places you’ve listed in your post are accessible by transit. What about your job requires you to be driving?

Ouch. Well, it's not something I'm used to. I want to get rid of the car altogether at this point.

I’m on my phone so this isn’t a full answer but: maybe driving for work just isn’t for me. I see where you’re getting at, but ive put time intI this company doing other things too, before this I was in a different department. This “promotion” was offered to me, and it was spearheading a new program, which was misleading. The rest of the company isn't so bad. You can easily figure out which it is. Major NYC tech company that has had MASSIVE layoffs recently. The places I go are far enough away from transit and I always am hitting 3+ in a day. I'll try and figure out a better way to explain it after getting some frustration out at the gym

Totally understand the frustrations with bad jobs. I hope you find a better job soon. Sounds like you could really use some vacation time around more people.

One of the few nice things about this company, is 3 weeks vacation time. Which is strugglingly hard to actually take. I’ve been throwing in random days when I can, but last year I had a whole week I couldn’t use, and they don’t roll over or get paid out. Trying to use them ASAP, as I plan on finding a new job fairly soonish.

You could always put in your two weeks and use those two weeks for vacation.

I’d feel like a scumbag doing that. I like my boss, he’s a cool guy. Very very undertrained, and in need of someone to split his workload (what I hoped I’d be doing), so I wouldn’t do that, but if today pulls through how I hope it will, I’m calling in sick tomorrow to go kayaking with a buddy.

Well there you go. I understand. My boss is great at my current job. I keep thinking of leaving because I really could use something with better pay, but the job and atmosphere here is just too good to leave. I hope you get to go kayaking. That should be fun. Ocean, lake, or river?

River I believe, right outside the hudson.
